SPORT IN MPEI

The department of Physical Training and Sport was created in MPEI in 1948 by the lieutenant-colonel Sport Master of USSR V.A. Kiseliov. The department has its own sport-bases including the stadium with the track an field athletics, the field for mini-football with artificial covering, the closed and opened tennis courts, the opened sport playgrounds, the swimming pool, the sporting complex with the large playing hall, the hall for heavy athletics, the hall for fitness aerobics, the hall for the table tennis.

The strongest MPEI sportsmen participate in traditional MPEI Sport Days in the form of the combined teams on 22 kinds of sport. The traditional Great Lefortovo Relay-Race between the teams of the MPEI Institutes is annually arranged beginning from 1945.

Various famous persons worked in this department of MPEI these years. Among them A.N. Ostapenko, Honored Worker of Russian physical culture, the Head of Students Sport Federation; A.A. Kharlampiev, Honored USSR Master of Sport, Honored USSR Coach, the founder of Russian system of free-style wrestling SAMBO; P.V. Nikiforov, Honored Master of Sport, Honored USSR Coach of boxing, champion of Russia, one of the founders and organizers of soviet school of boxing; V.A. Kuznetsov, Honored USSR Master of Sport, Honored USSR Coach, repeated USSR champion in water polo; A.A. Korneev, Honored USSR Coach on swimming, who brought up in MPEI V.G. Mazanov, who is the prize-winner of the Olympic Games and record-breaker of Europe and the world on swimming and V. Dvorkin, USSR champion on swimming.

Sport SAMBO division is headed by A.A. Kharlampiev pupil, V.V. Volostnykh, who trained 12 Masters of Sport on SAMBO and judo, four Masters of Sport on ju-jutsu, one Russian Master of Sport of international level on SAMBO, 25 Masters of Sport on SAMBO and seven Masters of Sport on the fighting sambo of the international level. Among Volostnykh’s pupils there are the champions and prize-winners of All-Russia and international competitions, Europe and World championships on the fighting SAMBO.

The MPEI Central Section of Sport Orienting is headed by USSR Master of Sport T.F. Bortnovskaya. Prize-winner of the World Championship among the veterans, the champion of Russia in 2002-2004 years, who trained 5 Masters of Sport, 12 candidates to Master of Sport. Among Bortnovskaya’s pupils there are double world champion A. Chukariova, prize-winners of Russian Students Games. The MPEI team on orienting is the prize-winner from 2000 to 2009 years.

During many times the division of the track and field athletics was headed by A.V. Kharitonova, the Honored Field Judge of All-Soviet level. MPEI combined team on the track and field athletics in 2002 took the second prize at the Moscow Cup Competition.
