National Research University "Moscow Power Engineering Institute" on the 18th International Heat Pipe Conference

Since the 12th of June to the 16th of June, 2016 there took place the joint 18th International Heat Pipe Conference and the 12th International Heat Pipe Symposium, 18th IHPC and 12th IHPS, Jeju, South Korea.

The associate professor of Heat-and-Mass Exchange Processes and Installations Department Savchenkova N. took part in work of the Conference with the report and also she acted as the Cochairman of the poster section "Two-phase thermosyphons / loop thermosyphons / single types of Heat Pipes / Special Heat Pipes / advance developments of Heat Pipes (TSL/SHP)".

The Conference has wide experience since the first one was organized in 1973 in Stuttgart, Germany, reflecting the origin and development of heat pipe industry in the world. Scientists and industrialists from many countries of the world exchange their scientific experience and cultural traditions. MPEI experts are leaders in the field of the theory and practice of design of heat pipes and thermosyphons and traditionally they take part in this Conference. This year the experts from 24 world countries have taken part in the work of the Conference making 144 reports.

The work program included key lectures, oral and poster reports, an exhibition of products and services, the public events including delivery of awards and honorary degrees, and also the cultural program.

The subject matter of the Conference:

• Fundamental research of the phenomena of heat passage by liquid through heat pipes and closed two-phase thermosyphons.
• Theoretical and pilot studies of heat pipes and thermosyphons, including capillary (CPL), loop (LHP), pulsating heat pipes, mini/ micro heat pipes, etc.
• Application for electronics refrigerating, including thermal regulation of microelectronics and power electronics, processors refrigerating, LED devices refrigerating.
• Application of heat pipes and thermosyphons in the power industry including heat exchangers, heat generators new and renewable energy resources, etc.
• Space applications of heat pipes, including spacecrafts of thermal control, systems of space power plants, refrigerating, heating and thermal control of the onboard equipment of planes, etc.
• Heat pipes for special application, including biomedical devices, sensitive metrological devices, agricultural objects, ecological systems, etc.
• The processing and handlings of materials connected with heat pipes and thermosyphons, including new developments of matches, power fluids, materials, modeling of corrosion and experimental tests
• Development of design and application of heat pipes, new ideas of heat pipes development.

According to the work results there were delivered the following awards - George Grover Medal, one of founders of the Conferences, and Donald M. Ernst Award, the researcher and the developmental engineer of heat pipe systems and their commercialization. This year the Russian scientists have got Donald M. Ernst Award in the category of "Heat Pipes for Engineering/ Technological Applications": Goncharov K., Head of the Heat Pipe Center of NGO named after S. Lavochkin and Panin Y., a leading expert of the Heat Pipe Center.

National Research University "Moscow Power Engineering Institute" has applied to the International Committee of the Conference on heat pipes with the offer to organize the 20th Anniversary International Conference and the International Symposium on heat pipes and thermosyphons 2020 in Russia under the auspices of our University. In competitive struggle with Australia, the offer of National Research University "Moscow Power Engineering Institute" has been approved.
