Conferment of MPEI Honorary professor to S. Batkhuyag - professor of Mongolian University of Science and Technology

On the 27th of June, 2017 there took place a ceremony of diploma delivery on conferment of National Research University "Moscow Power Engineering Institute" Honorary professor to Batkhuyag Sodovyn - the outstanding statesman of Mongolia, professor of the Mongolian University of Science and Technology (MUST).

Cooperation between MPEI and Mongolia has been lasting for 60 years. The first Mongolian alumni graduated from MPEI in 1959. Then over 300 engineers, bachelors, masters and 19 Candidates of Technical Sciences were trained at MPEI. More than 150 Mongolian specialists passed their training at MPEI. Now more than 50 citizens of Mongolia including 5 Ph.D.-students are trained at MPEI.

MPEI alumni successfully work in public authorities of Mongolia, they held posts of ministers, directors of combined heat and power plant, and they head the large companies. Many MPEI alumni successfully work in power engineering, industry, in the modern IT companies, the universities of Mongolia. Professor S. Batkhuyag is one of them.

In 1980 S. Batkhuyag defended his PhD thesis at MPEI. He is a foreign member of the Russian Academy of Natural Sciences (RANS) and he has an honorary title "Engineer adviser" of Mongolia. In 1986 and in 1990 he was elected as deputy of the great national khural (Parliament) of Mongolian People's Republic, he is a delegate of two congresses of the Mongolian National Revolutionary Party (MNRP), he was elected as the candidate for members of MNRP Central Committee. He also is one of the founders of the democratic constitution of Mongolia in 1992.

Since January, 1985 to November, 1987 Batkhuyag Sodovyn has been acting as the minister of the fuel and power engineering industry, since November, 1987 to April, 1990 - as the minister of ore mining, power engineering industry and geology, since April to October, 1990 — as the minister of the heavy industry of Mongolian People's Republic. Since October, 1998 to April, 2010 he has been working at National Security council of Mongolia as the non-staff adviser on power engineering. He was awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Labour, Order of the Polar Star, Victory Medal of National Revolution of the 1921st year, honorary titles: "The honorary power engineering specialist" and "The honorary worker of science" of Mongolia, Advanced power engineering specialist of Russia, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Honorary miner of the first and second degree, etc.

Professor S. Batkhuyag always emphasizes the communication with our university. Many students of MPEI Educational center in Ulaanbaatar (1999-2007) kindly remember S. Batkhuyag as strict, but fair professor. He has put a lot of effort into extending of cooperation between MPEI and MUST, especially with Power Engineering Institute of this largest Mongolian University.

In 2016 MPEI was awarded the Order of the Polar Star. Mr. Batkhuyag's support was crucial for our university.

It should be noted that the son of S. Batkhuyag was trained at MPEI as well, and this year his grandson successfully graduated from the first course.

Highly appreciating merits and professional qualities of prof. Batkhuyag, MPEI appropriately made the decision to award him the honorary title of MPEI Honorary professor. On the 27th of June, 2017 Rector Nikolay Rogalev opened the ceremony on this occasion. IET director S. Gruzkov represented MPEI Honorary professor and S. Batkhuyag from his part made his response after the delivery of the Honorary professor diploma. Among the participants of the ceremony were:

  • First Vice-Rector — Vice-Rector on Academic Activity Tatiana Stepanova,
  • Vice-Rector on economics Galina Kurdiukova,
  • Vice-Rector on International Relations Vladimir Zamolodchikov,
  • Head of the Department of staff development Nikita Savin,
  • Head of International Administration Sergey Shirinskii,
  • Head of Department of International Relations Alexander Tarasov

and others.

At the ceremony there were presented the son and the grandson of S. Batkhuyag: B. Amarsanaa and A. Tayvanbat and prof. Arslan from MUST Power Engineering Institute.
