MPEI has its own scientific
and technical library section located at Krasnokazarmennaya, 13, building “M”
that supplies the study and science process at MPEI with literature and
information materials for all the readers’ categories, which includes the most
numerous one – students, 13000 persons.
During all the time of study,
they use the library service, from the very first day when students realize
that special time should be dedicated to self-education.
Scientific and technical
library of MPEI is one of the largest university libraries. It is located in a
special five-floor building with a surface of 8712 m2. Its structure
allows the readers to use 4 subscriptions and 7 reading halls with the capacity
of 540 seats and Wi-Fi.
The Book Fund contains about 2
million items. It includes a variety of book types: of different languages,
journals, magazines, info leaflets, theses, abstracts, reports on research and
scientific works; and a variety of themes: science, education, society and
economics, politics, art and fiction.
The MPEI library provides the
educational process with literature and information materials, helps the
scientific activity of students, the pedagogical activity of teachers, research
activity of the engineering staff. Users are given access to leading Russian
and foreign full-text databases, as well as the abstract ones. An electronic
catalogue for the library fund has been being maintained, an electronic library
has been being created, including full-text intra-university publications,
research reports, and Ph.D. theses.
The library work has endured
implementation of IT that contribute greatly to automation of library
processes, as well as to local network appearance, inter-MPEI network and
Internet access.
In the STL of MPEI there is a
differentiated method of administration – by institutes or training centers, by
years and by groups, that ensures operative and quality support for the readers
of study or methodical literature. The service sites are also divided by years
– 1st floor for first two-years students, ground floor for senior
ones and two reading halls on the 2nd.
Before the start of the 1st
year students should subscribe to the library service with the help and
accordance to their supervisors. The subscription is carried out on the base of
the student card and is confirmed by the issue of the reader card for all the
period of the MPEI studying, granting access to all library’s facilities.
Students should obey the rules of the STL routine, taking care of the study
books that are given according to the curriculum often for one semester only.
The 2, 3 and 4 semester
students receive the sets of books basing on a group applications. The group
leaders fill in the forms and send it to the library, as well as the schedule
that optimize the receiving of the books, permitting to get all of them in half
an hour for one group. The group leaders also help the STL to manage the study
books for their groups and the distribution. Apart from that, any student can
take necessary material individually.
At the terms of the semester
students give books to the library, confirm the reader cards and take new ones according
to the curriculum regulations. In the summer period students are obliged to
return all the books they had taken from the STL. This notion is thoroughly
controlled by the library as one of the key rules for smooth working of it.
Group leaders could help the process by teamwork with students and librarians.
While properly conducted, it is lasting for thirty minutes only. Lists of
students that hadn’t returned the books are monitored by the administration and
could be received by group leaders at the library desk.
