Kirill Milyakov - 2nd year student of MPEI branch in Volzhsky

Between 19 and 25 July, 2021, I was studying in the Summer School of the University Alliance of New Silk Road in China. Due to the pandemic, the education was carried out remotely.

Xi’an Jiaotong Transport University is a technical educational organization that is included in the League C9 (Alliance of 9 elite Universities of China). It is considered a top not only in China, but in the whole Asia. University at which I passed the Summer school is a center of the University Alliance “Silk Road” created to build the study cooperation and stimulation of economic growth in the countries situated along the economic belt of the Silk Road. The city of location is Xi’an.

The education was carried out in English. To get admitted it was needed to send the documents (CV in English, international certificates confirming the knowledge of Chinese or English and the transcript in English). In two weeks after the application, I received a letter from the  Chinese part that I had passed the selection and was invited to study. In the current program more than 200 people took part, 8 of them were from Russia, the rest were from UAE, Azerbaijan, Pakistan, China, Turkey, Turkmenistan, India, Canada, France and other countries.

Daily lectures were divided in two parts: informative and acquainting. During the informative one professors told us about a certain field or direction or topic. We listened to the lectures of remarkable professors: Liu Maochang, Li Feng, Zhu Xv, Meng Fanrong, Shen Nan. During the lectures we had an opportunity to pose the questions. The topics of the lectures were: "Energy production from hydrogen"; "Chips in Solar Panels"; “China's Role in Global Governance”; “Development and Evaluation of Global Science and Technology Societies”; "Tik-Tok as a bridge between China and the whole world".

The opening ceremony surprised me a lot. Even being prepared in advance and having read of the Xi’an University, I couldn’t have imagined such a big Campus. Frankly speaking, I haven’t seen so much place for studying. It seemed like it was not an Institute, but a kind of city inside the city. As well, I was surprised by the multitude of specialties, modern innovation methods of science development and teachers amenity.

China is trying to unite the world by common goals and solve different international problems. “Scientists of the world should help each other and not fight each other”,- professor Zhu Xv said.

We were shown a report about the life of a student in Xi’an Transport University in the field of Power Engineering. The Institute seems to be lively and interesting. Students of different nationalities that you don’t expect to meet in China surprised me a lot.

I was actively participating in lectures and asked many questions that were always answered in a profound manner. In Campus there were many places for leisure, conversation, some places to get rest and dinner and enormous libraries where you could find new ideas. The laboratories were also impressive by their scale. It was underlined that in China a lot is given to science, its popularization and improvement.

China is one of the few countries that is ready to invest a lot in science and culture in many spheres. Moreover, the country actively invites foreigners to the Campuses because of their fresh view and approach. In China there is no difference in your nationality, you are never met by your outward appearance, you are met by your present and future merits. Apart from the development of the Institutes in different fields, there are some science-technical Societies. As an example there is AAAS, whose members receive access to all archives and libraries in different domains opened since 1880. The opportunity to study the literature of a completely new field, History, for example, is incredible. And among the other features there are discounts on goods of Apple, Office, Subaru and other brands. I was surprised that the members of the society can live in certain hotels for free and have free medical insurance. The biggest advantage and obligation is to publish the scientific articles in journals, newspapers, sites and to carry out conferences and science research. While writing the papers the member is constantly in touch with the professors and scientists that help to work out some details in reports and offer common projects. Apart from the mentioned bonuses, for the scientific publications the Society is paying the author. It is very honorable to be a scientist in China, and you can work along with the studies. These were the ideas from the interesting and informative lecture of professor Meng Fanrong.

In the summer school I learned many new captivating things, the lectures broadened my horizon, my time seemed to go unnoticed and fast. The activities were perfectly organized, memorable, optimistic and productive. I got an immense experience and knowledge that I would gladly apply in my further development. I really hope that in the future I will be able to participate in a similar event.
