In the autumn 2022/23 semester, Popov Naum-Leonid Ervinovich, Ph.D.-student of the Engineering-Economic Institute, Dept. of management in power engineering and industry, visited Jiao Tong University, China, in order to conduct research for his PhD thesis.

In the autumn of 2022, I took a special flight to Wuhan, China.

Upon arrival in Wuhan, we were sent to an isolation ward-hotel, where we were for a little less than two weeks under the supervision of the sanitary and epidemiological service of China, doctors and other personnel. They didn’t allow us to leave our room and even open the door, except in 2 cases: an avid test and a meal (we got meal three times a day). I would like to thank the interpreter and the rest of the people for their kindness and hospitality.

From the isolation ward-hotel, we went again in groups by bus to the airport. I was expecting a flight to Shanghai, one of the financial centers and largest megacities in China. I remember that Shanghai was very hot and humid in the first moments (on the way to the bus to the hostel). Then another quarantine was waiting for us but it lasted less than 11 days. By that time, the weather had already changed, it became cooler, and it started to rain.

Studying at Shanghai Jiao Tong University

The aim of the trip was to carry out work for my PhD thesis, as well as to strengthen international cooperation between universities and organizations.

Shanghai Jiao Tong University (hereinafter referred to as SHJTU) is a state research university located in Shanghai. Founded in 1896 by an imperial edict issued by the Guangxi Emperor, the university is known as one of the oldest and most prestigious institutions of higher education in China. It is a member of the C9 League. In addition, the university annually issues an Academic Ranking of the world's universities.

SHJTU is among the top 5 universities in China and the top 50 in the world!

We had a guided tour of the university where they solemnly told us about the history of the University, campus, and departments.

I would like to point out fruitful interaction with SHJTU teachers. During my studies at the university, I took part in an international conference and I wrote an article published in the ICASE journal in the SCOPUS system. I created a great foundation for future research and articles. I plan to continue our friendship and expand our cooperation in the future.

After getting to know the guys from SHJTU, we went on a short trip to China. We visited Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Guilin, Yangshuo, Henyan, Zhangjiajie, Changsha.

Our trip took place all the time by public transport that was more profitable. We bought tickets in advance and thought out the route to have time to visit lots of cities in a limited period of time.

The world’s tallest restaurant, Heavenly Jin, is located in the Lujiazui district of Shanghai which has taken the title “tallest restaurant” from Dubai restaurant.  This restaurant is the tallest in the world. Being at an altitude of 556.36 meters above the ground, it is located on the 120th floor of the J Hotel Shanghai Tower. The hotel occupies the upper floors of the Shanghai Tower, the tallest building in China and the third tallest in the world, reaching a height of 632 meters. All these facts are confirmed in the Guinness book of Records (all certificates are behind my back in the photo below).

In addition, according to the Guinness’s data, China is also home to “the tallest revolving restaurant in the building”.  The Twist Restaurant is located at an altitude of 422,8 m on the 106th   floor of the Canton Tower in Guangzhou.

The Guangzhou TV Tower was built for the Asian Games in 2010. The height of the TV Tower is 600 meters. Up to a height of 450 meters, the tower is built in the form of a combination of a hyperboloid carrier mesh shell and a central core.

The hyperboloid design of the Guangzhou television tower's mesh shell corresponds to the 1899 patent of Vladimir Shukhov, Russian engineer.

During my stay in Shanghai, we visited lots of places and events, including aviation and automobile exhibitions.

On November 27th, 2022, the main theme of the exhibition was new technologies. Representatives of 5 large Chinese companies talked about the general vector of representing the design of the future.

We also visited the COMAC concern, where, in addition to the research center, there is a demonstration workshop, where samples of a family of promising Russian-Chinese wide-body long-haul aircraft are actually presented. The presentation was interesting in terms of technical details and quite spectacular due to the use of video additions.

The most wonderful thing about such events is that after listening to the lecture, you can experience the iron bird by sitting in the pilot's seat. By the way, they decided to abandon the "horns" and use a pen for manual control of the object. Having tested this solution in reality, there was a complete understanding of why almost all aircraft manufacturers choose this option.

In addition to cultural events, he visited other cultural heritage sites; for example, the National Forest Park in Zhangjiajie Urban District, Hunan Province. The park is located in the picturesque territory of Wulingyuan, recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The park is notable for a large number of sandstone and quartz pillar peaks, one such example is Mount Tianzi (天子子山). It is very difficult to describe, so plunge into the atmosphere in the photos.

We managed to ride 100 dragons, yes, I didn't confuse anything, it's just the name of the Bailong elevator (literally, the elevator of a hundred dragons). It is noteworthy that on July 16, 2015, it was recognized by the Guinness Book of World Records as the tallest street elevator in the world. The descent took less than 2 minutes. But it was still possible to encounter the wild inhabitants of these places, especially attentive ones will notice macaques that are not afraid of people at all. They are already used to cooperating with tourists and posing for the camera.

The reserve is often shrouded in fog, so if you look at the cliffs from the tourist platforms at the top, it feels like the rocks are floating above the clouds and it is very easy to believe that you are on the planet Pandora. The diversity of the landscape and the color remained in the memory of the Celestial Empire.
