Since 2013, MPEI branch has been functioning in Dushanbe, established by decision of the presidents of the two countries. Following a press conference on August 1, 2013, between the President of the Russian Federation, Vladimir Putin and the President of the Republic of Tajikistan, Emomali Rahmon, in Novo-Ogaryovo, a joint statement was issued noting the significance of opening the MPEI branch in Dushanbe for the development of bilateral relations.

Cooperation is ongoing with Tajik Technical University named after academician M.S. Osimi and the Institute of Energy of Tajikistan. An agreement has been signed with the State Institution "Center for International Programs" for the training of highly qualified specialists for Tajikistan.

MPEI is actively engaged through the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) University, jointly with a number of higher education institutions in Kazakhstan, serving as the coordinator for the "Energy" and "Economics" fields.

MPEI is the CIS base organization for the training, retraining and advanced training of personnel in the electric power sector, following a decision made at the meeting of the Council of Heads of Government of the Commonwealth of Independent States member states held in Dushanbe, Republic of Tajikistan, on October 30, 2015.

As part of the joint action plan between MPEI and Rossotrudnichestvo, an International Thermophysical Conference has been held for several years at the MPEI branch in Dushanbe.

In 2019, MPEI established a Resource Center for Russian Education on the basis of the Russian-Tajik Secondary School at RTSU, within the framework of the federal project "Export of Education." That same year, MPEI faculty conducted physics classes for students in grades 9-11(12) at the aforementioned Russian-language school. Following the classes, the school's administration expressed gratitude to MPEI.

In 2024, a MPEI graduate from Tajikistan was awarded the Ismoil Somoni State Prize for Young Scientists for outstanding work in the field of science and technology.

Students of the MPEI branch in Dushanbe actively participate in extracurricular life, taking part in the international "Victory Dictation" event held at the branch. Annual held events are dedicated to the spring holiday of Navruz and the anniversary of Victory.​
