The Department of Thermal Power Plants was founded in 1930 as well as MPEI was established.

Summary

From the moment of department creation to the present time the main task of the department was and is training of highly qualified specialists in thermal power plants.

Department provides comprehensive training in thermal power engineering (boiler installations and energy ecology, system training in thermal power plants, units and complexes);

Department is a large scientific and educational subunit, which makes it possible to rationally use human and material and technical resources and carry out large educational and scientific projects.

Department carries out systematic training, since the training at the department provides all the components of the direction, as well as a deep practical orientation due to training at an experimental thermal power plant, which takes place in full-scale operating conditions of existing equipment;

It is capable of deploying extensive scientific research and design engineering work.

Research areas

  • Environmental protection; optimization of fuel combustion mode in boiler furnaces; aerodynamics of gas-air paths;
  • Noise reduction from GTU, CCGT, waste heat boilers, noise reduction from steam emission, noise reduction from traction machines, noise reduction from hot water boilers, screens for noise reduction of transformers and cooling towers, development of projects of sanitary protection zones, environmental audit by noise factor, acoustic inspection;
  • Reduction of noise and vibration in the energy sector. Development of projects of sanitary protection zones for energy facilities. Development of highly efficient thermal power equipment.Development of technologies for the protection of thermal power equipment

    Features

    Practical training on the existing equipment of PJSC Mosenergo, PJSC MOEK and other energy companies of the Moscow region allows you to study the processes of heat and electric energy production in a practical plane, make an informed choice of a future profession, assess career prospects and gain a foothold in the company.

    The use of unique laboratories and information and hardware complexes for performing scientific work with subsequent implementation in the educational process (3D design and simulator training, Siemens Digital technologies, Research of cooling tower heat exchange processes, Installation for the study of boiler furnace models, CHP MEI).

    Curators work with the students of our department from the first year of study. Up to the third year of study, bachelor students have the opportunity to determine the profile of education in their specialty. From the third year of education students take part in industrial practice. Starting from the fourth year of study, bachelors work with personal supervisors on graduation theses. In the magistracy, all four semesters of study, in addition to passing the training program, students work on individual research projects under the guidance of associate professors and professors of the department. Students have the opportunity to work in scientific groups of the department. Participation in projects, individual studies makes it possible to participate in scientific publications, helps to develop the skills of a researcher and receive increased scholarship.

    Unique equipment

    The department has unique laboratories: "3D design and simulator training", "Digital technologies of Siemens" "Studies of cooling tower heat exchange processes", "Installation for the study of boiler furnace models".

     The laboratories of the department are equipped with modern research equipment, which allows conducting research at the highest level. There is a high-temperature installation that operates at supercritical coolant parameters, simulating a power unit with a direct-flow boiler to study the corrosion rates of structural materials samples and the formation of deposits under various water conditions.

     The department has a REC "Noise reduction of power equipment"

    At the department attention is paid to informatization of education. The department hosts and maintains a unique calculation server for calculations in the field of thermal energy and water treatment.

     In 2014, a 3D design and simulator training center was established.

     In 2018, the Educational and Scientific Laboratory of "Digital Multimedia complex for the implementation of additional professional education programs;

    a multi-user system of remote audiovisual training used in the implementation of advanced training and professional retraining programs for specialists working at energy enterprises outside Moscow and the other region.
