The Department was formed in 2020 as a result of two Institute of Power Machinery and Mechanics departments merge – the Departments of Engineering Graphics (IG, founded in 1930) and the Departments of Steam Generator Engineering (PGS, founded in 1943).

Summary

The Department of Modeling and Design of Power Installations trains bachelors of the "Power engineering" qualification branch with "Boilers, combustion chambers and steam generators of nuclear power plants" bachelor's program and the "Power plants running on organic and nuclear fuel" master's program. The department also trains highly qualified personnel with the specialty: 2.4.5. "Energy systems and complexes" (previously 05.14.14 "Thermal power plants, their power systems and units").

The Department also studies students with heat engineering, electromechanical, mechanical and electrotechnical specialties. Content and specifics of their specialties is taken into account for their projects.

The Department carries out the wide range of research activity. The key directions of this activity are State founded grans, as well as energy industry key customers’ projects. A large number of scientific articles were written and published basing on the research activities results. These articles are included in various electronic libraries, reference books and leading scientific journals. These research projects become the basis for the candidate of technical sciences degree and doctor of technical sciences degree dissertations. More than 70 dissertations were written and successfully defended basing on the Department. Thanks to the research work, various models of power equipment were designed and patented in different years.

Research areas

Scientific and technical developments are carried out in several key areas:

• Thermal, hydraulic, and aerodynamic calculations and design characteristics development of boilers and nuclear power plants’ steam generators.
• Design development and optimization, drawings, and 3D models’ creation for power engineering objects.

Features

The Department of Modeling and Design of Power Installations offers educational services in accordance with the State Educational Standards, which are being prepared for 7 MPEI institutes. The computer technology and software development allowed lecturers to use multimedia technologies and graphic systems in their work with students.

To increase research work efficiency, the department has modern computing equipment that contains the most current versions of the necessary software. A lot of scientific and technical problems have been solved due to this equipment and software. It provides continuous scientific activity for department’s students and workers.

Department’s workers in collaboration with students created several application programs for the following tasks solving:

• Thermal calculations of power nuclear reactors (WWERTR).

• Gas turbine combustion chamber’s design calculations.

• Steam boilers’ heating surfaces’ thermal and structural calculations.

• boiler’s harmful emissions calculation (EnPoll).

Unique equipment

Rapid Prototyping Equipment

Rapid prototyping equipment allows quick and accurate receiving of various parts and products layout of created 3D models.

Modern computer classes

The department has five computer classes with multimedia equipment and graphic stations for modern graphic programs usage.

Two specialized classrooms are equipped with workstations for engineering calculations carrying out, drawings preparing and three-dimensional objects modeling. It’s widely used by students in their projects’ work.

Computational equipment for research carrying out

A computing cluster consisting of 5 Hyperion nodes (the total number of cores is 120, the total amount of RAM is 640 Gb), united by a high-performance InfiniBand data and messaging network for modeling gas-dynamics and combustion processes.

The Aquarius workstation, based on 2 Intel(R) Xeon(R) processors, is used for the hydro- and gas dynamics processes calculation and steam and hot-water boilers’ dynamic models’ creation.

More than 100 workstations based on Intel(R) Core(TM) processors for 3D modeling, design documentation preparation and engineering calculations.

Environmental Monitoring Laboratory

Information obtained during the environmental monitoring stations operation is planned for publication on the MPEI portal. It will inform the community about the region’s environmental situation and the MPEI TPP’s environmental performance.
