Summary

The Department of Steam and Gas Turbines is one of the oldest pedagogical and scientific schools of MPEI, the formation of which began in 1930.

The teaching staff of the department has prepared more than 30 textbooks and monographs, including 13 reprinted in various countries (Bulgaria, Great Britain, Hungary, Germany, China, the USA, Poland, France, the Czech Republic, Yugoslavia, Japan).

Textbooks of teachers of the department occupy a special place in the training of many generations of engineers and are included in the golden fund of technical literature created by the Higher School. Today, the process of teaching students is provided by 10 professors, doctors of technical sciences and 15 associate professors, candidates of technical sciences.

Research areas

The department is actively involved in solving the problems of energy and turbomachines. Training programs suggest the possibility of targeted training of specialists for work at the enterprises of Gazprom, FGC, OGK, TGK and in various fields of practical activity.

Recent projects

The development of fundamental and applied research in the field of gas dynamics.

The solution of complex technical problems related to the improvement of the heat engineering equipment of TPPs and NPPs.

Investigation of the problem of the interaction of moving media with streamlined surfaces.

Features

The creation of modern powerful turbine plants for supercritical steam parameters;

The research in the field of aerodynamics of turbines;

The improving the reliability and efficiency of turbines;

New effective methods for separating moisture from flowing parts of wet-steam turbines;

The development of new control and stop-control valves; labyrinth seals; new effective ways to prevent flow separation in wide-angle diffusers; effective absorbers of uneven velocity fields.

Unique equipment

At the department there are laboratories at the educational experimental combined heat and power plant. In laboratories, students undergo training on running equipment directly at the university, while at the same time, the CHPP in the training laboratory generates electricity and heat for Moscow in normal mode.
On the basis of the laboratory, the department carries out various contracts for the study of the aerodynamics of turbomachines, automatic control systems, technical diagnostics, monitoring of turbine units, and solving problems of their reliability.
